History of CROP Hunger Walk

The CROP walk (standing for ‘Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty') is a large-scale event in which community members raise pledges from family and friends to support hunger relief both around the corner and around the world through the worldwide outreach programs of Church World Service. This pairing of a local and global focus has been part of Church World Service’s mission for decades.

Since 1947, Church World Service’s CROP community events have provided an effective means for individuals, congregations, and communities to respond to humanitarian needs worldwide. Some 2,000 communities across the country participate in CROP events each year, raising funds for local hunger-fighting agencies as well as for the international relief and development efforts of CWS. The agency works in partnership in about 80 countries globally, and has offices in South America, East Africa, Southern Africa, Pakistan/Afghanistan, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, and Indonesia.

You might be wondering how the CROP walk will benefit our area’s poor and hungry too. It works like this: CWS enables each CROP Walk, like ours, to set aside 25% of the funds raised for local poverty relief. This year, as in past years, those funds will go to organizations in nearby Chester. The other 75% will assist the needy in countries in Asia, Africa, and South America.

This year the CROP walk is happening on October 17, 2010 a small contribution can make a big difference. There are several ways you can help: you can become a walker, sponsor one, or give a donation to the walk or the Church World Service.
